| Sunday, April 18, 2010 (afternoon) |
Bursar Fundamentals Workshop
Presented by Barry Greenberg, Barry Greenberg Consulting
PDG presents a unique opportunity. In a single afternoon workshop, you can listen to, participate in and laugh at some of the most significant issues facing the recently appointed or even the seasoned Bursar. Topics such as customer service, internal control, e-commerce, privacy regulations, management, cashiering and collections will be covered. Come prepared to interact with your fellow Bursars - asking for and offering insights into the functioning of the Bursars Office. This is not solely a lecture but an organized discussion among all the participants. Even an experienced Bursar might pick up a nugget or two. Barry worked at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) for nearly 16 years. He was most recently Bursar for SIUE for 8 years. Before that he held the position of Audit Manager for the SIUE and SIU School of Medicine campuses. During his tenure as Bursar, he oversaw SIUE’s conversion to E-commerce applications, establishment of a satellite Bursar’s Office and adoption of new customer service initiatives. Prior to SIUE Barry worked at AT&T for 22 years in the Accounting, Information Systems and Human Resources departments. In addition, Barry is an adjunct faculty member at Webster University teaching graduate finance classes.

Leadership Skills Workshop
Darla Freeborn, Whitworth University
You have a “problem personality” on your team. It’s creating conflict and lowering morale in the office. What will you do to fix it? Or will you look the other way and hope it fixes itself? Whether you are a Bursar overseeing a team or you are a member of that team, acquiring/improving your leadership skills will give you the ability to participate in creating a successful working environment. Having good leadership skills not only helps improve morale and helps to create an office of happy humans, but will assist in improving performance as well. This workshop is designed to help you build skills that will improve your performance as both a leader and a team member. Come prepared to interact, share and have some fun as we look at leadership skills/styles and what it takes to be a better leader, how to build a successful team, how to improve relationships between team members as well as other offices, handling performance evaluations both as a manager and as the employee, goal setting, conflict resolution and handling those difficult disciplinary situations.

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS
Financial Literacy for Students - With the changing economic landscape over the last 18 months, financial education seems more important than ever. As we know, the financial decisions students make in college have an important influence on their financial situation after college. In addition, their financial situation in college can affect their academic performance. In this session we will discuss strategies and resources you can use to implement a financial education program on your campus. Charmaine Daniels, University of Illinois
Staying Legal and Still Getting the Most out of In-House Collections - They graduated owing you money. They’re gone, but in your office, not forgotten. The Alumni Office wants to keep them as devoted alum, willing to give money to their beloved alma mater. If you send them immediately out to hard collection, their beloved alma mater won’t be beloved for long. Attempting to collect those bad debts in-house first can result not only in more speedily collected revenue, but will give you the opportunity to keep the alum dedicated, save them collection costs and help them protect their credit ratings. So, how will you accomplish all this and stay legal? What will get you in hot water? This session will focus on collection practices and the important aspects of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act that you need to know in order to protect the rights of the debtor while, at the same time, maximizing income to and protecting your university. Darla Freeborn, Whitworth University
Merchant Services 101 - With the volume, cost and complexity of card acceptance on the rise, this session provides a brief overview of card payments and a discussion about key issues such as interchange, convenience fees and chargebacks. Bring plenty of questions for the Q&A period. Rick McClintock, Fifth Third Processing Solutions
Using Project Management Techniques to Streamline Operations - In today's climate of limited resources, it is becoming increasingly important to create efficiencies. Are there processes within your office that you would like to change but are not quite sure where to begin? Is there a project you would like to undertake yet needs internal support in order to move forward? Come and learn about the project management techniques you can use to make your ideas a reality, from getting your plan off the ground to realizing efficiencies in your everyday operations. Ellen Last, Higher One
Going to School Under the GI Bill - Learn and ask about the latest hot topics associated with the various GI Bill education programs with specific emphasis on the new Post-9/11 GI Bill. Ron Scoggins, Lead Education Liaison Representative for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
Do You Have an Innie or an Outtie? (Payment Plan, That Is!) - To outsource or not to outsource, that's the question! Come participate in a discussion about the benefits and disadvantages of both. And we promise...no stump speeches to persuade you to either option! Charmaine Daniels, University of Illinois and Laurie Beets, Oklahoma State University
Accelerating Collections: What's Next in Electronic Deposit Solutions - You’ve heard of Check 21 and ACH check conversion and how they might benefit you. What’s next? Come hear how electronic deposit solutions have been successfully implemented and the benefits they’ve generated. Learn about important developments and considerations with respect to increase check clearing time, lockbox integration, scanning hardware and legal issues. Ruth Harpool, Indiana University
Using a Financial Ombud to Influence Recruitment and Retention - Learn how University of Kentucky's unique ombud approach effectively deals with students facing financial hardships from recruitment to graduation. Mary Marcum, University of Kentucky
Fun with FERPA - This is a great session for anyone who has a question about or an opinion of FERPA. You ask; we'll answer! It will be informative as well as entertaining. Barry Greenberg, Barry Greenberg Consulting
Where's My Refund? - In this session, we'll have a discussion on one of our favorite topics: student account refunds! Come ready to share your best practices and hear some of ours...and no...eliminating the processing of refunds will not be one of our suggestions...sorry! Charmaine Daniels, University of Illinois
Payment Trends and Merchant Fees - We all accept payments, but at what cost to our institutions and at what cost to your students? Could you be the hero that saves your school hundreds of thousands of dollars each year in merchant fees? This session will give you the tools to analyze your merchant statements and find those hidden fees. An update on recent legal changes designed to protect you (and your students) against credit card issuers and their predatory tricks will also be provided; as well as discussions on the latest trends in payments, including: convenience fees, PINless debit, mobile payments and secure vault payments. John McElroy, Touchnet
Cashiering and Departmental Deposits - Does your athletics department collect fees for football camp and then leave the checks in someone’s unlocked desk drawer for a couple months before bringing them to the cashier to deposit? Is their deposit slip an account number written on a “sticky-note”? With accounting standards and controls growing ever more stringent, it is important to standardize and enforce appropriate depositing procedures across campus. This session will look at the details that need to be considered, the accounting standards that apply, how to be PCI compliant if you accept credit cards and some options you can offer departments to reduce the pain of following the rules. Darla Freeborn, Whitworth University
Internal Controls Your Student Account Office Cannot Live Without - You can make a difference in protecting your organization. Learn about various internal fraud types, detection methods to uncover those schemes and preventive internal control measures to help deter incidences of internal fraud. Laurie Beets, Oklahoma State University
From Orientation to Graduation: Communicating with Your Students - Students today move at a fast pace and the ways in which they communicate are changing just as rapidly. Traditional channels of information distribution are still effective, but they may not be as far reaching as they once were. In this interactive session, you will learn how to find the balance between the old and new methods of communicating with your student body from the day they step foot on campus to the moment they leave to pursue their careers. This session will provide you with examples that have allowed schools to effectively communicate with today's students and provide you with the opportunity to share best practices with your colleagues. Ellen Last, Higher One
Doing More with Less - Listen to smarter and more efficient techniques that are being utilized in the bursar's office that allow for increased services and move day-to-day tasks forward during accelerated budget/staff cuts. Mary Marcum, University of Kentucky
Payments Fraud Risk Management: Processing Information; Not Paper - Different payment methods have different risks. Learn of the various risks by common payment type and then about ways to mitigate those risks while still receiving all of the information you need to accurately post and process the payment. Identity and payments fraud are growing businesses. What can your office do to avoid such fraud? This session will help you learn how to keep your bursar's and cashiering offices out of the 'fraud' headlines. Ruth Harpool, Indiana University
Implementing an Enterprise Commerce Management System - Learn how Canisius College implemented an Enterprise Commerce Management System, which not only enabled them to become PCI compliant, but also allowed them to earn extra revenue, streamline operations and save money. Topics include: ebilling, in-house payment plans and online storefronts. Kevin Smith, Canisius College
